Couldn’t agree more. I believe reliability and validity work not as opposite sides of a spectrum, but as concentric fields of view where reliability gives you accurate, foveal vision of some aspects of the business that sustain reliable scrutiny, whereas validity-oriented inquiry gives you the peripheral, wide-angle vision you need to detect movement and make rapid decisions. In my view, it would be borderline suicidal to make any validity-oriented decision that is overly contradicted by any accurate, reliable data you happen to have. But on the other hand, it is reductive and counterinnovative to refuse to make any decision that is not backed up by reliable data. At the end of the day, if you find yourself between a rock and a hard place because both “MBA offspring” and “authentic designers” treat you as an outsider, or, worse, an impostor… Congratulations! You’re in the sweet spot where the interdisciplinary magic happens.
